In a move that highlights the complexities of regional politics in the Middle East, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei recently recalled Iran's role in extinguishing Kuwait's oil well fires following the Persian Gulf War. The event took place in 1991 when hundreds of Kuwait's oil wells were set on fire by Iraqi forces as part of a scorched-earth strategy during its retreat from Kuwait.

The fires, which lasted for months and emitted vast amounts of smoke into the atmosphere, were eventually extinguished with the help of international teams. Iran participated in this effort, sending oil industry experts and firefighting specialists to contain the blaze. According to reports, American experts initially estimated that it would take at least two years to put out the fires, but due to pressure from other nations and the Kuwaiti people, they were forced to cooperate with other companies and their experts.

Today, tensions between Iran and Kuwait have risen again, with Tehran accusing its neighbor of allowing its territory to be used against it. In response to reports that Bahrain and Kuwait covertly participated in airstrikes against military targets inside Iran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized the principle of good-neighborliness, stating that countries that benefited from Iran's assistance in the past should not allow their territory or facilities to be used against Iran.
