Iran Offers Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz in Seven Days
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program within seven days. The proposal comes with several conditions, including the lifting of the US naval blockade and waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales. Additionally, a ceasefire would be observed that includes Lebanon.
The terms of the proposal are similar to the Memorandum of Understanding reached in June, but with an accelerated timetable. However, previous agreements have been met with skepticism due to concerns over Iran's willingness to compromise.
US President Donald Trump has expressed no urgency in reaching a deal, citing potential benefits before the November midterm elections. The proposal also faces opposition from hard-liners within Iran who dominate the security forces and may not accept compromises championed by moderates like President Masoud Pezeshkian.
