Iran Offers Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz, Trump Rejects Proposal
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed a deal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program in seven days, provided that the United States lifts its naval blockade, waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and observes a ceasefire including Lebanon.
The proposal was made during a private gathering at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Araghchi suggested that a speedy agreement would help US President Donald Trump ahead of November's midterm elections, according to Trita Parsi, Executive Vice-President of the Quincy Institute think tank.
However, within hours of being reported, it was claimed by The Wall Street Journal that Trump had rejected the proposal, citing US officials familiar with the matter. They stated that Trump was skeptical about Tehran meeting his demands and saw a renewed bombing campaign as likely.
