Iran Offers Hormuz Breakthrough, Oil Markets React
A potential breakthrough in the Hormuz situation has emerged as Iran reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports.
The proposal, which has not been independently confirmed, was conveyed through intermediaries and aims to restart negotiations for a more permanent end to hostilities. This move comes as Saudi Aramco has restarted operations at its East-West pipeline, potentially allowing exports from Yanbu to resume and providing an alternative route that bypasses Hormuz.
The oil market reacted sharply to the news, with Brent crude dropping from around USD 102 to below USD 99, while diesel prices fell by around 3%. This highlights the significant geopolitical risk premium embedded in energy prices and the sensitivity of the market to any prospect of a breakthrough.
Washington faces competing incentives over a deal, with domestic pressure favoring de-escalation. However, rising oil flows through Hormuz despite the blockade and Saudi Arabia's restoration of an alternative export route may reduce the urgency for compromise with Iran.
