Iran Offers Seven-Day Deadline for US to Lift Naval Blockade
Iran has made a new proposal to the US to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program. The proposal, conveyed through mediators, would require the US to lift its naval blockade and waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales within seven days. In return, Iran would agree to observe a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.
The deal is similar to a previous Memorandum Of Understanding reached in June, but with an accelerated timetable. The earlier agreement collapsed after Iran resumed attacks on shipping in the strait.
US President Donald Trump has said he is in no rush to reach a deal, despite high oil prices fueling inflation and cost-of-living concerns. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian hosted the prime minister of Qatar early on Friday, as diplomatic movement continues.
