Iran Offers Strait Reopening for Sanctions Relief and Ceasefire Talks
Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reviving nuclear talks if the US eases sanctions, lifts its naval blockade, and honours a ceasefire. The offer was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday to the United States through mediators.
The proposal is similar to a memorandum of understanding reached in June, but with a faster timetable of seven days. Araghchi suggested that a quick agreement could help US President Donald Trump ahead of November's midterm elections, while also easing economic pressure on Tehran.
Saudi Arabia was sceptical of the latest push for a deal due to recent surge in attacks by the Houthi rebels. The US has been facilitating significant oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and has described conversations with mediators as 'positive and constructive.'
