Iran Offers to Mediate Between Houthis and Saudi Arabia
Iran has expressed its willingness to mediate in the ongoing conflict between Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, and Saudi Arabia. During a briefing on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Tehran is ready to assist in resolving the dispute. He mentioned that a roadmap developed years ago could serve as a foundation for ending the hostilities.
The conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed pro-government forces resumed in mid-July after a four-year pause. The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of striking Sanaa airport while an Iranian plane carrying a Houthi delegation was landing. In response, the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and launched attacks on its vessels in the Red Sea.
On Saturday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for strikes using ballistic missiles and drones against an Aramco oil refinery in Riyadh. The escalation highlights the continued volatility in the region and the potential for further conflict.
