Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz in Exchange for Blockade Lift
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, has revealed that his country will reopen the Strait of Hormuz if a US naval blockade is lifted. The offer comes with several conditions: an end to the blockade, a waiver on sanctions against Iranian oil sales, and a ceasefire in Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, through which about 20% of the world's oil exports pass. Iran has been at odds with the US over its nuclear program and maritime disputes in the region.
According to Araqchi, Iran will reopen the strait and resume talks on its nuclear program within seven days if these conditions are met. The offer is seen as an attempt by Tehran to ease tensions with Washington and alleviate economic pressure from international sanctions.
