Iran Oil Minister Quits Amid US Sanctions Pressure
Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has stepped down due to personal reasons, state media reports. The resignation comes as Iran faces intense pressure from US sanctions and a naval blockade that's severely impacted its oil exports.
Paknejad had been in the role since August 2024 and was quoted by state media earlier this year saying that revenues from oil sales were still coming in, despite the challenges. However, his resignation has now been accepted by President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Hamid Bovard taking over as acting minister.
The move follows Iran's demand for the US to lift sanctions on its oil sales and end the blockade, which is part of negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The country's ability to export oil is a crucial source of government revenue, making this development significant in understanding the ongoing tensions between the two nations.
