Iran Proposes Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz in 7 Days
Iran has proposed a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and revive talks on its nuclear program within seven days, provided that the United States lifts its naval blockade and waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales.
The proposal was made by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in a private gathering at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, according to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute think tank.
Araghchi suggested that a swift agreement would benefit US President Donald Trump ahead of the November midterm elections, and help reduce gas prices.
However, there are concerns about whether Iran's hard-liners will accept compromises championed by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who hosted the prime minister of Qatar on Friday in what was seen as a sign of diplomatic movement.
