Iran Reparations Demand Dents Strait Reopening Hopes
Crude oil prices have stalled near one-week highs due to renewed tensions between the US and Iran. President Donald Trump's demand for reparations from Iran has dampened hopes for a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Brent crude futures price dropped $0.10 (0.11%) to $87.62 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures fell $0.05 (0.06%) to $82.08 as of 1:05 p.m. Japan time on Monday.
Trump's statement on Sunday sparked a sharp decline in optimism for an early peace agreement between the two nations. Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, noted that 'there appears to be a gap between the U.S. and Iran over what any actual agreement would look like.'
The renewed tensions have refocused attention on geopolitical risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most critical oil transit chokepoint.
