Iran-Russia Gas Transfer Talks Gain Momentum Amid Ongoing Negotiations

Iran and Russia are engaging in intense negotiations over a gas transfer agreement. The talks began after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in July 2024, as stated by Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador to Moscow.

The deal involves transporting gas through an overland pipeline via Azerbaijan with an initial capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year, equivalent to around 150 million cubic meters per day. Most issues have been resolved, but 'one or two' remain to be settled by Russia, according to Jalali.

Precise timeline for implementation is uncertain due to the need to finalize the agreement and address technical and contractual matters. President Masoud Pezeshkian is personally overseeing the project, while Iran's Oil Ministry works to finalize arrangements.
