Iran Says New US Sanctions Will Fail as Desperate Move
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, dismissed the threat of new US sanctions as a sign of desperation on Sunday.
Araqchi said the expected measures would fail to defeat Tehran, which has been under huge pressure from international sanctions since the US and Israel launched attacks in February.
The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has threatened to impose 'the toughest sanctions in history' on Iran, but Araqchi described this as a repetitive scenario that will ultimately fail.
The Iranian government remains defiant despite nearly six months of war, with thousands killed and its infrastructure repeatedly hit by airstrikes.
Tehran has also brought shipping to a virtual standstill in the Strait of Hormuz, refusing to allow unauthorized oil tankers to transit the waterway that is vital for global oil shipments.
