Iran Seeks End to Yemen Blockade Amid Houthi Advances
Iran's government has called for an end to Saudi Arabia's blockade of Yemen and the resumption of talks after Tehran-backed Houthi rebels took control of a key port. The move brings the Houthis within 50 miles of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial alternative to the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping.
The Iranian foreign ministry statement emphasized that Yemen's sovereignty must be respected and its problems cannot be resolved through blockades or military alliances. Iran is ready to support negotiations, according to the statement.
Experts say this development could give Tehran more leverage in any negotiations with the United States after over six months of war.
The entry of Houthi forces into the Red Sea port of Mokha marks their biggest territorial gain in years and has sparked concerns about the stability of global shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strait handles around 12% of the world's goods, including oil, which could lead to price increases if disrupted.
