Iran Strait of Hormuz Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring
The ongoing tensions between Iran and the US have led to a significant increase in crude oil prices. The WTI is currently priced at $93.35 per barrel, while Brent is at $98.27 per barrel.
Iran has announced an exclusive restricted zone around the Strait of Hormuz and a new shipping corridor with Oman, aiming for greater control over the key waterway.
The proposed zone would cover an area from near the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea, through the Strait of Hormuz, and into the Gulf waters to the north. Mohsen Resale, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that if ships stop or commit a violation within this zone, they will be put on the sanctions list.
The US has not yet responded to this announcement. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp. has entered a joint venture with Venezuela Petroindependencia SA, which holds a 49% interest in the venture.
