Iran Strikes Gas Gold with Massive Southern Field Discovery
Iran's oil minister announced a significant gas discovery in the southern province of Fars, amid ongoing tensions with the US. The new field contains over 7.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas, with around 5.7 Tcf recoverable. This is equivalent to enough gas to supply one phase of the South Pars gas field for around 15 years.
According to Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, the newly discovered gas is 'sweet gas', which would reduce both development and operating costs. The field also contains significant volumes of gas condensates, generating tens of billions of dollars in new wealth for Iran.
This discovery comes after Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding in June to pursue negotiations toward a final agreement. However, talks have since stalled amid disputes over implementation and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
