Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed to have struck an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, citing an 'illegal attempt' by the vessel to pass through the waterway. The incident occurred on Thursday night, with the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend reportedly being targeted.
The move comes as tensions between Iran and the US continue to escalate. In February, the US launched a war against Iran, which Tehran has asserted control over much of the Strait of Hormuz since then.
In related news, hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Tehran on Friday, vowing support for the government and pledging to take up arms as 'Janfaday-e Iran,' or those who sacrifice their lives for Iran. The rally was one of the largest shows of support for the government since the US and Israel launched attacks in February.
South Korea has announced plans to expand its naval operation in the Gulf of Aden, citing concerns over piracy and shipping disruptions in the region. However, Seoul has stressed that it will not send troops to intervene in the Iran war.
