Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz has become a flashpoint in the ongoing Middle East conflict as Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced they had struck an oil tanker in the strategic waterway. According to state news agency IRNA, the Togo-flagged oil tanker 'Trend' was targeted and detained after a fire broke out on board late Thursday.
The incident occurred during a period of heightened tensions between Iran and Western powers, with Washington continuing to press its counterblockade of Iranian ports. The Islamic republic has been seeking to charge ships for passage through the strait, attacking vessels it accuses of attempting to circumvent its preferred route.
A British maritime agency also reported an attack on a ship in the area, stating that an 'unknown projectile' had caused a fire that was extinguished early Friday. It remains unclear if the IRGC and UKMTO reports refer to the same incident.
