Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed to have struck an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, citing an 'illegal attempt' to pass through the waterway. The tanker, identified as the Togo-flagged Trend, was allegedly targeted on Thursday night.
Tehran has asserted control over much of the strait since the US and Israel launched attacks in February. The IRGC's navy warned that vessels attempting to pass through without authorization would face 'destruction'. The Associated Press could not immediately confirm the report.
In a separate incident, another tanker was struck by an 'unknown projectile' while transiting out of the strait on Wednesday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations. The crew reported safe, but no other details were available.
