Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz, Escalating Mideast Tensions
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed responsibility for striking an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, citing an 'illegal attempt' to pass through the waterway without authorization. The incident occurred on Thursday night and involved the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend.
The state broadcaster cited the Guard's navy as warning that vessels attempting to pass through the strait without permission would face 'destruction.' Tehran has asserted control over much of the waterway since the US and Israel launched their attacks in February.
In a separate incident, another tanker was struck by an 'unknown projectile' while transiting out of the strait on Wednesday. The crew reported safe, but no further details were available.
