Iran-US Backchannel Talks Push for Hormuz Reopening Amid Sanctions Standoff
Indirect talks between Iran and the US are ongoing to broker a deal to end fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major waterway. The conflict has caused global economic damage and badly hurt Iran, which is under pressure from sanctions and has seen its oil sales restricted.
The discussions have continued despite major hurdles between the two sides, with US President Donald Trump open to a non-military resolution if one can be reached. However, another US official said Washington will not agree to a deal until nuclear issues are addressed.
A draft proposal under discussion would first reopen the strait and lift the US blockade, followed by the removal of sanctions. The plan includes no tolls for shipping traffic, something Tehran has been seeking, and would temporarily manage traffic on what was seen as an international waterway before the war.
