Iran Waits for US Response on Hormuz Proposal as Oil Prices Climb
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, said that Tehran expects to receive a US response today regarding its proposal for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The development comes after President Trump publicly rejected Iran's original seven-day proposal over the weekend.
The situation has become slightly more complicated since then, with reports indicating that US and Iranian officials held separate talks with mediators on Monday. Discussions are expected to focus on an amended version of Tehran's initial proposal, which still ties the reopening of the Strait to specific conditions, including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief, and the lifting of the US naval blockade.
Oil prices have been affected by the ongoing tensions, with WTI crude jumping by more than $4 on Monday after Trump's rejection of the Iranian proposal. However, hopes of further negotiations resurfaced, causing oil prices to give back most of those gains. Today, oil prices are moving higher again, with WTI up nearly 2% to $94.60 as supply concerns remain in focus.
