Iran War and Middle East Supply Outages Fuel Winter Gas Fears

The ongoing war in Iran and Middle East supply outages are creating concerns about natural gas shortages and price spikes this winter, particularly in Europe and Asia.

Europe's gas storage levels are historically low for late July, at just above 50% of capacity. Wood Mackenzie estimates that the continent will struggle to replenish its storage to 75% by November, which is below the usual target of 90% filled.

The Qatari LNG outages, combined with higher-than-usual summer demand, have left import-dependent nations from adequately replenishing their natural gas storage ahead of the winter months. David Lewis, senior analyst for gas and LNG at Wood Mackenzie, warns that it's 'pretty dire' and that Europe and Asia will face a tough winter.

The competition for LNG cargoes is escalating, with European, Asian, and northern African countries outbidding each other for shipments. This is driving up prices, with natural gas pricing in the US remaining relatively flat while spot prices in Europe spiked by nearly 26% last week.
