Iranian Carbon Recovery Project Shortlisted for WPC Energy Excellence Awards
An Iranian carbon-recovery project has made it to the finals of the prestigious WPC Energy Excellence Awards. The award recognizes projects and innovations demonstrating measurable impact and advancing the global energy sector.
The project, titled 'CO2 Recovery & Utilization of Tehran Oil Refinery,' is a collaborative effort between Carbon Bared, an Iranian company, and Tehran Oil Refinery.
The technology captures carbon dioxide from flue gases at the refinery and converts it into liquid carbon dioxide with a purity of over 99.9 percent. The annual capacity of the facility is around 40,000 tons, equivalent to sequestering carbon across approximately 3 million square meters in the vicinity of Tehran.
The recovered CO2 has applications in various sectors including medical and pharmaceutical industries, laboratories, food production, agriculture, firefighting, and welding. The company reports that it not only meets domestic demand but also exports a portion of its production to Iraq, competing with Turkish producers.
