Iranian Lawmakers Push to Remove Foreign Minister Over U.S. Talks
Iranian lawmakers are pushing to remove Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over his meetings with U.S. envoys in New York. The impeachment motion comes amid a steep decline in Iran's oil exports, which have reportedly dropped to zero. Hardliners claim Araghchi met with Steve Witkoff, a Trump envoy, without approval from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. However, both the Iranian foreign ministry and Witkoff say the talks were mediated through Qatar.
The political turmoil follows a period of uncertain diplomatic relations. President Donald Trump described the New York session as 'very productive,' but by September 27, his tone had shifted. He rejected Iran's ceasefire offer, stating, 'They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make.' Despite this, he hinted at further discussions.
Iran's oil crisis has deepened, with no crude exports in September, the first time since 1979. Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad resigned on Sunday, and stored crude supplies have dwindled from 90 million barrels in July to 29 million by early September. The U.S. naval blockade has effectively halted all oil shipments. Meanwhile, global oil prices continue to fall, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropping to $88 and Brent crude to $100.46.
As tensions rise, Saudi Arabia has increased its oil supply, and the G7 has agreed to release 100 million barrels from emergency reserves. Trump has also hinted at potential new strikes on Iran, raising further geopolitical concerns.
