Iranian Oil Flows into Tajikistan Despite US Sanctions Risk
Tajikistan has started receiving oil and petroleum products from Iran, marking a potential new energy source for the landlocked country. The deliveries began in late August, following talks between the two countries on expanding cooperation in the oil and gas sector.
The volume of shipments and their commercial terms remain unclear, but Tajikistan has requested up to 2.55 million tons of crude oil and petroleum products annually from Iran.
The move raises questions about potential US secondary sanctions for doing business with Iran, as Washington has stepped up pressure on Tehran's oil revenues.
Tajik political analyst Parviz Mullojonov said the search for Iranian supplies was driven in part by Tajikistan's need to secure alternative energy sources amid continued uncertainty over fuel supplies from Russia.
