Iranian Oil Tankers Stranded Off Sri Lanka Amid US Pressure
Iran's oil exports have been severely impacted by US pressure, leading to a crisis for several Iranian tankers stranded off Sri Lanka's coast. According to The Wall Street Journal, around 20 empty Iranian oil tankers are drifting about 15 miles off the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, with reports that their food, fuel, and fresh water supplies are running low.
The vessels, which had delivered sanctioned Iranian oil primarily to China, have idled their engines and are unable to return to Iran due to the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This situation is a consequence of Washington's effort to disrupt Iran's oil exports and shipping network.
Sri Lankan authorities have stated that these vessels are operating in international waters outside Sri Lanka's territorial boundaries, but are being monitored by local authorities. The Trump administration has imposed additional sanctions on Iran and warned countries and companies trading with the country of potential consequences.
