Iran's Oil Exports Grounded by US Sanctions
Iran's oil export numbers have plummeted to nearly zero, down from an average of 893,000 barrels per day in the first seven months of this year. The latest blow came on August 24, when the US Treasury Department launched 'Operation Economic Outcast,' imposing sanctions on nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels connected to Iran's oil revenue networks.
The initiative targets banks, shipping firms, and port operators that handle cargo, regardless of what flag it flies under. The US has also been physically enforcing compliance, redirecting 75 commercial ships and boarding 2 vessels since July 14.
Iran's Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati confirmed on August 20 that oil export revenues have effectively reached zero. Without these revenues, the rial faces enormous pressure, and the regime loses its primary funding mechanism for everything from military operations to domestic subsidies.
