Iran's Oil Minister Paknejad Resigns, NIOC Chief Takes Over
Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has unexpectedly resigned from his post, handing over leadership of the ministry to Hamid Bovard, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
Paknejad's resignation was accepted by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who appointed Bovard as caretaker oil minister until a new minister is approved by Parliament.
No reason was given for Paknejad's abrupt departure, although local media had earlier reported that he faced disagreements with the president. Some analysts suggested that Pezeshkian was unhappy with Paknejad's handling of the trustees, who owe over $10 billion in unpaid oil exports.
Paknejad has led Iran's massive oil and gas industry through two rounds of US and Israeli aggression, overseeing the reconstruction of petrochemical plants damaged by Israeli aerial attacks. Bovard, a long-serving oil ministry staffer, has implemented a plan to increase production despite US sanctions limiting access to foreign investment and technology.
