Iran's Oil Minister Resigns Amid Sanctions and Regional Tensions
Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has resigned from his post, with President Masoud Pezeshkian accepting his resignation. Hamid Boverd, the current Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), has been appointed as acting oil minister until a permanent successor is named. The resignation comes after Paknejad had previously submitted his resignation on multiple occasions, which were not accepted by the president. According to reports, Paknejad stepped down for personal reasons.
Paknejad had been a key figure in Iran's energy sector, overseeing the oil and gas sector during a challenging period marked by international sanctions and regional tensions. During his tenure, the Oil Ministry focused on increasing crude oil production, expanding energy exports, and advancing projects aimed at developing Iran's upstream and downstream petroleum industries. He also played a role in efforts to restore and modernize parts of Iran's energy infrastructure following damage caused during recent conflicts.
Hamid Boverd, who will now lead the ministry on an interim basis, has previously served as the Managing Director of NIOC. The resignation comes as Iran continues to pursue higher oil production, expand energy cooperation with regional partners, and manage the impact of sanctions on its energy sector.
