Iran's Oil Revenue Plundered by Billions in Embezzlement Scandal
Iran's oil revenue has been ravaged by billions of dollars in embezzlement. The country uses shadowy middlemen known as 'trustees' to sell oil, steel, petrochemicals, and other goods abroad while bypassing international sanctions.
However, many of these trustees have absconded with the sales revenues, totaling over $11 billion. According to reports, they failed to hand over the funds to Iran's coffers, leaving a significant dent in the country's finances.
Roya Maleki from RFE/RL's Negah-e-Farda (Iran Tomorrow) program explained that these middlemen have been involved in various transactions, including oil sales. They would facilitate deals between Iranian companies and foreign buyers while collecting fees for their services.
The embezzlement scandal has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Iran's sanctions-bypassing mechanisms and the vulnerability of its economy to financial manipulation.
