Iran's Revolutionary Guards have claimed responsibility for striking an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state news agency IRNA. The incident occurred late on Thursday, with a fire breaking out on board the Togo-flagged vessel 'Trend'. The Islamic Republic has been accused of detaining ships that attempt to circumvent its preferred route through the strategic waterway.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported an attack on a ship in the Strait, stating that it had been hit by an 'unknown projectile' causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished. However, it remains unclear whether the two incidents refer to the same event.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with Iran seeking to charge ships for passage in its ongoing confrontation with the US.
