Iran's Surprise Strikes Send Oil Prices Soaring Amid War Risk Fears
Oil prices surged as war risk fears reignited following surprise strikes by Iran on US military installations. The attacks sparked retaliatory measures from the US and Saudi Arabia, further escalating tensions in the region.
The price of Brent crude rose by over 8% to re-top $90 per barrel, while WTI crude futures ticked up by about 7.6% to trade above $85 per barrel.
The conflict has centered around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that accounts for more than 100 daily crossings carrying a fifth of the world's oil. Traffic through the strait remains under Iranian control since the outbreak of war with Israel and the US on February 28.
