Iraq's Speaker of Parliament Haibat al-Halbousi has called for special status for the country's oil exports passing through the Strait of Hormuz during talks with his Iranian counterpart.

The request was made in Baghdad on Wednesday, but the details of what arrangements Iraq wants and whether Tehran has agreed to consider it remain unclear.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf with the Arabian Sea and is a critical waterway for oil tankers leaving Iraq's southern export terminals.
