Iraq Targets 10M bpd Oil Production by 2030 Amid Ambitious Expansion Plans
Iraq's Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has outlined ambitious plans to boost the country's oil production to around 10 million barrels per day by 2030. This would be a significant increase from current levels, which have only recently recovered to above three million bpd following disruptions caused by the Iran war.
During a meeting with senior officials and advisors in September 2026, al-Zaidi emphasized the need for development of production and export infrastructure to accommodate the expected rise. He also directed the oil ministry to increase output from fields in the Kurdistan Region and expand exploration efforts.
The plan aims to make Iraq's oil production more proportionate to its reserves, population, and potential. Al-Zaidi also ordered full investment in associated gas to meet domestic energy demand, reduce waste, and eventually eliminate the need for imports. He instructed the oil ministry to lay the groundwork for an energy conference to attract international investment, expertise, and technology.
