Black Sea Disruptions Fuel Wheat Price Surge

Wheat prices have been trending upward in recent weeks, despite the Northern Hemisphere harvest season typically bringing an influx of global production into the market. The main driver behind this trend is the increased risk premium associated with Black Sea supply disruptions.

The attacks on ports and terminals in Russia's Novorossiysk region have heightened concerns about wheat availability for international trade. NKHP, one of Novorossiysk's major grain terminals, suspended loading operations due to damage caused by an August 12 attack, with repairs expected to take up to four months.

The terminal has an annual capacity of approximately 7.1 million metric tons, while the three major terminals in Novorossiysk have a combined capacity exceeding 20 million metric tons. The situation is significant because it's not just an isolated disruption; attacks have affected logistics across the Black Sea and Sea of Azov at a time when Russia would normally be accelerating shipments from its new crop.

Consequently, importers are evaluating alternatives to Black Sea-origin cargoes, potentially creating opportunities for wheat from countries like the United States, Argentina, and Australia. Increased shipping risks may also make vessel operators more cautious when conducting business involving Russian and Ukrainian ports.
