Japan and Saudi Arabia Bolster Economic Ties Amid Shift to Clean Energy
The economic partnership between Japan and Saudi Arabia has reached a new level of cooperation, with trade valued at approximately $41 billion. The relationship is shifting from being primarily based on oil and technology to a more diversified one encompassing clean energy, investment, industry, space, and advanced technologies.
Japanese direct investment in Saudi Arabia has reached SAR 49 billion, and the two-day visit by Japanese Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu is expected to see an expansion of economic ties across various sectors. Artificial intelligence is among the areas where cooperation is expected to grow, alongside energy which remains a key component of bilateral trade.
The 'Lighthouse' clean energy initiative aims to foster cooperation in hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels, and carbon capture technologies. Saudi Arabia supplies Japan with a strategic energy resource, while Japan provides technology, industrial expertise, financing, and partnerships that the Kingdom seeks to leverage in its drive toward economic diversification.
