Japanese Refiners Secure Crude Supplies Through November Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Japanese oil refiners have secured enough crude to maintain supplies through November, according to industry officials. This reassurance comes as tensions in the Middle East escalate, with renewed fighting involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement raising concerns about disruptions to crude shipments.

The Petroleum Association of Japan (PAJ) has confirmed that refiners have been able to maintain supplies despite disruptions affecting Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure. Some Saudi crude shipments to Japan are being rerouted through alternative arrangements, including ship-to-ship transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz.

'In some cases, oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz at Saudi Arabia's risk before being transferred to us outside the Gulf,' said Shunichi Kito, president of the PAJ. He noted that supplies from Saudi Arabia have not ceased entirely but emphasized that this may not continue.

Japan relies heavily on imports to meet its energy needs, making it particularly sensitive to disruptions in Middle Eastern oil supplies. The country's refiners have secured sufficient crude through November by utilizing stockpiles accumulated from previous releases of Japan's national oil reserves.
