Jefferies Downgrades Gulfport Energy Stock Amidst Natural Gas Sector Concerns
Gulfport Energy's stock rating was downgraded by Jefferies to Hold from Buy on Wednesday, with a price target lowered to $180 from $239. The company's shares currently trade at $161.91, having declined by around 24% over the past six months due to concerns about the natural gas sector.
The firm cited near-term natural gas price risks stemming from a potentially warm winter and growth in associated gas production as key concerns. Jefferies also noted that Gulfport Energy's increased leverage for acreage acquisitions is poorly timed given the current commodity environment, with the doubling of price per location reducing returns.
The company's debt-to-equity ratio stands at 0.5, while its current ratio of 0.58 suggests liquidity constraints that could limit financial flexibility. Jefferies emphasized the importance of combating commodity volatility by owning more of the value chain and maintaining a delevered balance sheet.
