Kamoa-Kakula Flooding Hits Copper Supply Hard

The global copper market is facing a significant challenge due to the flooding of the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mine, operated by Zijin Mining and Ivanhoe Mines, was expected to produce 380,000 to 420,000 tons of copper in 2026.

However, due to the flooding, production has been reduced to 290,000 to 330,000 tons for the year. This reduction represents a significant loss, with an implied loss of around 50,000 to 130,000 tons.

The Kamoa-Kakula mine is considered one of the most important copper operations in the world due to its high-grade ore and enormous reserve base. The concentration of such deposits in a single region creates a structural vulnerability that the industry has not yet adequately priced into long-term supply planning.

Copper prices have been affected by this disruption, with prices approaching record territory. The market is highly sensitive to news flow from major producing operations, and the supply crunch that analysts have long forecast is now a reality.
