Kansas Farmers Embrace Tech Amid Rising Costs and Drought
Kansas farmers are embracing new technologies to boost efficiency and productivity, but rising costs and dry conditions are creating significant challenges. According to agricultural broadcaster John Jenkinson, who farms in southwest Kansas, technological advancements such as drones and precision farming equipment are helping to streamline operations.
Jenkinson highlighted the use of aerial drones that can target specific sections of a field, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, systems like John Deere's See & Spray technology utilize cameras and computer vision to identify and spray individual weeds, increasing crop yields.
Despite these innovations, farmers are facing sharply higher production expenses due to rising fuel costs. Jenkinson noted that diesel prices are particularly damaging as they coincide with the fall harvest and winter wheat planting seasons. The increased costs of fertilizer and transportation are also affecting consumers, as nearly every product relies on diesel-powered equipment somewhere along the supply chain.
Dry conditions in western Kansas have further exacerbated the difficulties for farmers. Jenkinson reported that irrigated corn yields have been impacted by excessive daytime heat and overnight temperatures above 70 degrees, resulting in lower-than-expected crop yields. Some dryland crops have already been lost due to drought, while concerns remain about planting winter wheat with limited soil moisture.
Jenkinson emphasized the need for increased competition within the fertilizer industry and called on the federal government to examine existing antitrust laws to address market concentration and high prices. While acknowledging the current difficulties, he encouraged farmers to remain hopeful and discuss their concerns with family members, citing past experience and resilience as a key factor in overcoming these challenges.
