Karoon Energy Faces Brazil Export Tax Uncertainty Amid Dividend Payment
Karoon Energy (ASX:KAR) is facing an uncertain fiscal backdrop in Brazil, where the government has extended a temporary tax on crude oil exports. The company's Bana field in the Santos Basin exports its oil, making it directly subject to this levy.
The Brazilian association representing oil and gas exploration and production companies had secured an injunction against the tax, but it was lifted on appeal. This means the levy remains in force while the broader legal challenge continues, adding uncertainty to Karoon's cash flow forecasts.
Karoon is due to pay its fully franked interim dividend at the end of this month, but the payment arrives against a less comfortable fiscal backdrop. The company's revenue and earnings were below the prior corresponding period in the first half, reflecting lower production and softer realised prices.
