Karoon Energy Faces Production Deferral at Brazilian Field
Karoon Energy has temporarily shut down one of its wells at the Baúna field in Brazil due to an electrical fault. The SPS-92 well's monitoring system detected a problem on September 22, and a controlled shutdown was performed to investigate the issue.
An analysis revealed a fault in one of the three electrical phases in the newly installed power cable for the downhole ESP. As a result, the pump is now operating on two phases to maintain safe operations.
To reinstate full production, Karoon plans to replace the faulty cabling system with a rig-based well intervention. The company has secured an option over a suitable drilling rig and is currently planning the intervention, including securing permits and services.
The production deferral is expected to be approximately 3,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day until the cable system is replaced. Karoon's CEO, Carri Lockhart, stated that the company will keep the market informed once they have more clarity on the intervention timing.
