Kazakhstan Among Top Gold Buyers Amid Global Reserve Diversification
Kazakhstan has emerged as one of the world's top gold buyers, purchasing 15 tons of the precious metal in the second quarter of this year. According to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC), Kazakhstan ranked fourth among central banks globally during this period, behind only Poland, China, and Uzbekistan.
The global official sector purchased a record 289 tons between April and June, marking a sharp rebound from just 57 tons in the first quarter. This trend is attributed to geopolitical tensions, lower gold prices compared to first-quarter peaks, and central banks' efforts to diversify reserve assets.
Amir Aktanov, an analyst at Halyk Finance's Analytical Center, notes that central banks have remained net buyers of gold for 15 consecutive years, purchasing over 1,000 tons annually in the past three years. Kazakhstan has been a consistent participant in this trend, steadily expanding its gold reserves between 2011 and 2021.
The country's renewed purchases suggest that reserve diversification remains a priority as policymakers seek assets perceived as resilient during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. With official institutions expected to remain major buyers through the coming year, central bank demand is likely to continue providing structural support for gold prices.
