Kenney Warns Separation Would Lead to Economic Decline in Alberta
Jason Kenney, the leader of Alberta's United Conservative Party, clashed with separatist leader Keith Wilson at a referendum panel discussion about First Nations and the economy. Kenney warned that separation would lead to economic decline, citing Quebec as an example where separation became a permanent mainstay in its politics, leading to economic downfall.
Kenney argued that Alberta's separation would follow a similar path, pointing out that hundreds of thousands of people left Quebec after it separated from Canada. He also noted that the Bank of Montreal is based in Toronto, implying that major financial institutions tend to avoid separatist regions.
Gordon, another panelist, countered by citing recent studies suggesting that Alberta's separation would put the province on a trajectory of economic decline, comparing it to Brexit. Wilson, however, disputed this comparison, stating that Alberta's massive oil reserves make it difficult for other countries to relocate their businesses there.
