Kenya Boosts Wheat Price to Sh5,100 Amid Local Production Push
The Kenyan government has announced an increase in the producer price of wheat to Sh5,100 per 90-kilogram bag. The move aims to boost farmers' incomes and encourage local production.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new price will help improve farmers' livelihoods and support the country's efforts to prioritize locally produced grain.
The increase comes after consultations between wheat farmers, the Cereal Growers Association, and millers. The government expects about one million 90-kilogram bags of wheat to be harvested during the 2026 season, down from last year's 1.7 million due to adverse weather conditions and a shift to barley production.
The Ministry of Agriculture said it is implementing measures to increase wheat production and reduce reliance on imports. These include expanding fertilizer subsidies, promoting high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties, increasing mechanization, and supporting commercial wheat farming.
