Kenya Cooking Gas Prices Set to Rise Amid Global LPG Costs Surge
Kenyan households are facing another increase in cooking gas prices due to rising global LPG costs. The price of butane has surged by 25.8% to $628, while propane prices have risen by 23.2% to $494. These increases are attributed to disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East and a decline in exports from Saudi Arabia's Yanbu terminal.
The latest price hikes come after Kenyan consumers experienced a significant rise in cooking gas prices in May, with local LPG prices increasing by more than Sh390. Petroleum industry executives predict that the cost of LPG will continue to rise next month due to market conditions and individual distributors' pricing.
TotalEnergies Marketing is currently selling a 13-kilogramme cylinder at Sh3,400, while Rubis Energy is retailing the same size cylinder at Sh3,202.50. Oil marketers and dealers have faced criticism for not fully benefiting consumers from tax exemptions introduced in 2023.
