Kenya Raises Wheat Price to Boost Local Production and Reduce Imports
The Kenyan government has increased the price of locally grown wheat to KSh 5,100 per 90kg bag for the 2026 season. The move is aimed at strengthening domestic production and reducing reliance on imports.
Over 2,000 wheat farmers across six counties will benefit from the revised price, which is an increase of KSh 350 from last year's rate. The affected areas include Narok, Nakuru, Meru, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Uasin Gishu.
According to Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe, the goal is 'to build a competitive, profitable and sustainable wheat industry, improve farmer incomes, reduce reliance on imports and keep flour affordable for Kenyan households.'
The government has also outlined targeted interventions to stabilize and grow the wheat industry, including fertiliser subsidies, expanded mechanisation, introduction of improved seed varieties, land commercialisation, climate-smart agriculture practices, and enhanced pest control programmes.
