Kenya Sets New Wheat Price at Ksh 5,100 per Bag Amid Production Decline

The Kenyan government has agreed to pay wheat farmers Ksh 5,100 per 90 kilogram bag for this year's harvest, a 7.4% increase from last year's price of Ksh 4,750.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the higher price aims to improve farmers' incomes while ensuring a stable and affordable supply of wheat to millers and consumers.

The new price will benefit at least 2,000 wheat farmers from six counties: Narok, Nakuru, Meru, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Uasin Gishu.

Kagwe attributed the decline in local wheat production to adverse weather conditions and a shift by many farmers to barley production, which fetched Ksh 5,300 per bag last season.
