Kenya's Oil Deal Under Scrutiny After Ugandan President's Foul Play Allegation
Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang'i has called for full disclosure of the Government-to-Government (G-to-G) oil importation deal after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's revelation of alleged foul play.
Museveni stated that a Kenyan legislator, referred to as 'Jirongo', informed him in 2019 about the presence of middlemen in East Africa's G-to-G oil importation deal.
Matiang'i argued that this has raised doubts about Kenya's oil dealings and demanded transparency and accountability. He called for the publication of the full agreement, disclosure of the middlemen's roles, and restoration of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) to its proper role in securing supply and stabilizing the fuel market.
Museveni had ended the G-to-G arrangement with Kenya due to concerns about unnecessary costly procurement arrangements. The Ugandan government clarified that the deal was inked to mitigate a severe US dollar shortage in 2022, which threatened to crash the economy and drain foreign exchange reserves.
